Invasion

MARS, PA - So while I was traveling the Northwest (Pennsylvania) I decided to make a special stop to see the Mars Spaceship. I’ve been wanting to do a pilgrimage ever since I found out Mars had enough of a sense of humor to have a flying saucer in town. And even though I missed my exit, I turned. I don’t plan on heading north next weekend.

Rumor has it the saucer likes to wander about the town of Mars, so I didn’t even bother trying to look for it. That’s the reason I drove right past it on my way to the Foodland where I asked for directions. I was actually looking for someone older to ask about the thing figuring if it no longer existed they would at least remembered it. There’s nobody over 18 working at the Foodland. I thought my best chance would be to ask the manager, who responded by saying she didn’t know “where they put that thing this time.” And so my heart dropped. If I wanted to find the fabled flying saucer I would have to explore Mars on my own.

But then the cashier, a boy of no more than sixteen, saved the day giving me directions to the ship. And so I had to wonder if the space ship was where all of the kid’s hung out on a Friday night.

“Psst. Hey Donnie.”

“Yeah?”

“We’re gettin’ some beer and meetin’ over at the saucer, man. Tell everybody”

“Awesome.”

It’s on the corner of Grand Ave. and Pittsburgh St. right across from the bank. It appears that they’ve even cemented it into the ground so this just may be it’s permanent residence. It’s not very large, only about the diameter of a kiddie pool…if that. Actually, more of the blow up kind than the pasticky kind. It’s solid though, and even if it wasn’t cemented i would be difficult to move. Regardless of it’s less than impressive largeness, it’s still pretty cool.

It appears the residents of Mars have a rather interesting relationship with the flying saucer. While taking pictures a gentleman in a wife beater was kind enough to stop and stay out of my shot, but didn’t move on before making a snarky comment about it.
