Philadelphia, PA - So, the world’s largest piñata isn’t really a travel destination as much as it is/was an event, but it’s still giant so I’m going to write about it.
The plan, concocted by Carnival Cruise Lines, was to built the world’s largest piñata and crack it open so that 8,000 pounds of candy would shower a parking lot of onlookers. It didn’t really happen that way, thus disappointing all that had come to watch… and nearly causing a riot. All in attendance were hugely disappointed, and although I was sad, there were some highlights that made it worth while.

This week I traveled deep into Ohio to see the giant baskets. More specifically the Longaberger baskets. There were three in all to see, but by the time I hit Dresden I was tired and cranky and there was some sort of street fair closing up so I passed. Now kicking myself for doing so. I totally should have pushed through the vendors closing up and visited the house sized basket.

CHESTER, WEST VIRGINIA - This weekend I was back in West Virginia. I planned on taking it kinda easy this weekend and mapped out a trip to Chester to see Blue Lake and the World’s Largest Teapot. Needless to say, the teapot was a lot easier to find.
Although I doubt that the Chester teapot is the world’s largest, it is pretty big. As you take the Chester exit just off Route 30 heading west, it looms there larger than life. It’s red and white and boldly claims that it’s the world’s largest. There’s also a door and windows that have been boarded up, which were used in its past lives as the World’s Largest Teapot concession stands and souvenir shops.
It’s penned in on a bit of land just off the Chester exit, and so if you want to spend some time admiring it than you do when driving past you need to park across the street and then cross oncoming traffic getting on and off the Route 30 exit. It’s not as scary as it sounds. Route 30 spent most of my voyage west as two lanes…one going east and one going west and not a single passing zone.
As for Blue Lake? Well, I think I found it…maybe. Currently it appears to just be muddy sludge. I know a guy. Hopefully he can get me better directions so I can see what little blue is left.
